The Many Lies of Michael Carroll, NLP Academy, South Croydon
If you are unfamiliar with this ridiculous saga, you might need to read these two previous blog posts first. Both links will open in a new tab/window.
Coronavirus – not the only plague upon humanity
The Strange World of Michael Carroll – NLP Academy, South Croydon, London
It should be noted that Michael Carroll wasn’t the only one who sent me a legal threat pertaining to these posts.
Anyway, this is what triggered it all. This appeared on Facebook, posted by Darren Shaw. I did have a copy of the text on “…not the only plague…” blog post, but Michael Carroll sent me a legal letter demanding its removal. I’ve copied the original social media post below for reference. I should add that this legal letter sent via email on headed ‘paper’ from a genuine law firm did not look like it had been written by an actual lawyer because it was riddled with poor grammar and hyperbole.
So, as written previously, the aforementioned blog posts triggered a bit of a reaction from Michael Carroll and he accused me of responsibility for an allegedly racist cartoon on Facebook. I’ll copy below the relevant screenshots of the posts from his Facebook page below. Do go get a big coffee and some biscuits, it’s a long one. You’ll see he initially was outraged because “it appeared on a self help guru’s wall (sic)” (that’s me, by the way), but he didn’t directly accuse me of posting it. He conflated that issue later on.
He did call me “sick” and “the pilfering racist from Littlehampton” though.
As for my mate up north…? Who knows.
Now…here’s the thing. I never posted that cartoon/gif. Michael even says he never saw it himself, it was sent to him. Well, what further evidence does he need? He can now let his imagination run wild:
If I was kicked out of the Society of NLP, then no one told me about it. As for ripping off “EDMR” (sic) we’ll get to that shortly.
He’s got more lies to go yet:
“...he has taken it further by publishing a video of a riot claiming the black youths were rioting where they were patients.”
Another lie, he’s just made that up too.
Regarding the plagiarism issue…I’m getting to that soon. Go get another coffee.
In case you missed it earlier, he signed off his first lengthy post with this:
Black people on my courses will be treated differently? Yeah…ok, Michael and your evidence for this is…..?
He says let’s see how Facebook and people in the self-help business respond. Well, lots of people did respond.
But anyone who attempted to suggest he was mistaken had their posts deleted almost immediately.
Of course, he couldn’t stop there, he’s inevitably going to double down (again) and continue his tirade. So let’s go to the whole plagiarism issue where he is alleging that my model of IEMT is ripped off from EMDR, which in turn is ripped off from John Grinder.
This is where it gets all a bit weird. Enter the scene: The Real John Grinder. Well, actually a Facebook page purporting to be the Real John Grinder, but is actually Michael Carroll posting as John Grinder, you can tell by the poor grammar and poor spelling:
I sent the following email to John Grinder:
Please refer to the screen shot attached. Given this was posted just days after Michael Carroll sent me a legal letter alleging “copyright theft”, “plagiarism” and “defamation” I think it reasonable to assume this is aimed at me and my work with Integral Eye Movement Therapy (IEMT).
With reference to your claim to EMDR you state:
“...I told Francine to systematically move her eyes through the various accessing positions typical of the major representational systems (with the exception of the kinesthetic access). I suggested that she see, hear (but not feel) the events in question – obviously the kinesthetics were to remain resourceful (the anchored state) while she processed the event.“
You go on to claim:
“EMDR and its subsequent copies came from NLP and directly from John Grinder, who is never referenced as the source in the new therapies, which are not new, just renamed! 🙁
People have been renaming EMDR through the years dipping into a scrabble bag of letters coming up with new acronyms to describe an old process, one that came right from John Grinder. This field needs a good clean up.”
So, in reference to your description of what you did with Shapiro, specifically in what bit of IEMT do we do this?
Thank you for your prompt reply,
Needless to say, I never got a reply.
Now, let’s just check something here. Grinder states, “I told Francine to systematically move her eyes through the various accessing positions typical of the major representational systems (with the exception of the kinesthetic access). I suggested that she see, hear (but not feel) the events in question – obviously the kinesthetics were to remain resourceful (the anchored state) while she processed the event.”
Quite straight forward that, definitely a strong basis for EMDR. But wait a second. EMDR training is 7-days long for an accredited basic course, with extra training time and modules for supervision and practitioner qualification. Might I suggest that EMDR constitutes rather a lot more material than just the snippet from Grinder? See: https://emdrassociation.org.uk/become-an-accredited-therapist/training/
As for IEMT being an old process renamed, I can be fairly sure that neither John Grinder nor Michael Carroll have ever attended an IEMT training, or discussed what IEMT actually involves with either myself or any of the approved trainers.
I don’t expect to ever get a reply to my question to John Grinder.
Now, you can access the thread by clicking below (now with corrected spelling):
And just take a look at the number of times this post has been liked and shared: 7300 likes, 183 shares. Seems rather a lot – are these real?
So, Michael boasts he has blocked me long ago and doesn’t look at my “garbage.” I know someone will send him this, so here’s a public offer for Michael Carroll:
Michael, I understand you have painted yourself into a corner.
But there is an `out`.
All you need to do is publicly retract your false allegations, send me a private apology, and make a donation of no less than £1000 to the AAA charity we support in Delhi, India (https://integraleyemovementtherapy.in/fundraiser-sanitation-products-for-the-homeless/)
If you do this, I’ll publicly accept your apology with good grace and we can be friends again.
Or, you can follow through on your legal letter to me and try to sue me for defamation.
Can Michael Carroll cure cancer?
Can Bob build it?
