This is an issue I have been dealing with a lot recently and the sniggers and smirks of my
colleagues reveals a lot about the attitudes towards this crime. There are frequently insinuations
that somehow the victim deserves it and a recurring belief that this is a homosexual crime seems to
prevail. This ignorance and stupidity must end now.

Hope For Healing.
A recovery site with resources, groups and general resources dealing with sexual assault of men.
"The horrors experienced by many young inmates, particularly those who are convicted of nonviolent offenses, border on the unimaginable. Prison rape not only threatens the lives of those who fall prey to their aggressors, but it is potentially devastating to the human spirit. Shame, depression, and a shattering loss of self-esteem accompany the perpetual terror the victim thereafter must endure."
Prison Rape. Our Wake Up Call.
Article by William C. Losch. "The most rigorous study was conducted by researchers Wayne Wooden and Jay Parker, in 1980. They found that 14 percent of the inmates had been "pressured into having sex against their will," a figure the researchers said was probably an undercount......It is possible to extrapolate from these small studies and hazard a guess about how many prisoners across America are victims of sexual aggression. Start with a conservative estimate of 14 percent. Multiply that by the 1.3 million men sitting behind bars right now (1993)."
Rape In Prison.
Well written article by a prison officer on the Loompanics site. "Suicide rates in prison are estimated to be 15.4 per 100,000 inmates in all the states averaged out, with the exception of California, which has an astronomical 179 per 100,000. Penologists believe that the number one cause of suicide in prison is rape, with AIDS and depression from being in prison being the two runner up reasons."
Amnesty International's site dedicated to preventing torture worldwide. "Despite the universal condemnation of torture, it is still used to extract confessions, to interrogate, to punish or to intimidate. In Police stations and prison cells, on city streets and in remote villages, torturers continue to inflict physical agony and mental anguish. Their cruelty kills, or leaves scars on the body and mind that last a lifetime."

The Howard League Children In Prison.
"During the 1990s the number of children in prison grew substantially. 86% more children were held in prison on 30 June 1999 (2,422)compared to June 1993 (1,303)... Reconviction rates for children leaving prison are very high. 85% of all 14-16 year olds released from prison in 1996 were reconvicted within two years, and 62% reoffended so seriously they re-entered custody."
"The work of the Prison Reform Trust is aimed at creating a just, humane and effective penal system.
We do this by: inquiring into the workings of the system; informing prisoners, staff, and the wider public; and by influencing Parliament, Government and officials towards reform."
Association of Prisoners (UK).
"The Association of Prisoners was formed in 2000 to represent and campaign for prisoners' rights in the United Kingdom. We believe that someone is sent to prison AS punishment and not FOR punishment. As part of this, we believe that prisoners have entitlement to all rights not necessarily taken away by being in custody. You can read more about our policies by reading our constitution."
"PrisonReform.org lists government sites, campaign groups, support groups, charities and other organisations related to prison, prison reform and penal reform (mainly within the United Kingdom). PrisonReform.org is not related to any of the sites listed, nor is it responsible for their content or any dealings with the associated organisations."

Treatment of Victims
"Victim Support is the independent charity which helps people cope with the effects of crime. We provide free and confidential support and information to help you deal with your experience. We also aim to promote and advance the rights of victims and witnesses in all aspects of criminal justice and social policy."
Increasingly our public spaces and public buildings are beginning to resemble a maximum security environment. Why are more people not raising concerns here? Surveillance cameras are inside our schools and inside our hospitals, our prisons are over crowded to the degree that our beloved Lord Chief Justice announces sentencing decisions that seem to defy logic and belief. The naive cry of, "if you have nothing to hide, then you have nothing to fear" is the call of the coward. Wrongful accusation, illogical criminal and civil laws. Maybe laws change, you get taxed to the hilt, wars are funded and fought in your name, maybe someone points a finger at you and accuses. These things should alarm you. Tony Martin's case (below) should outrage you.
This entire case disturbs me immensely. If you really think our justice system is balanced and fair, you need to read up on Tony Martin's experience of "The System." From the site: "He is an innocent man. He is also an honest man, incapable of the kind of lies that would mean a quick exit from prison. It has also been reported that social workers considered his opinion that 'things were better forty years ago' as evidence that he was 'not living in the 21st century' and so should not be released. It appears that holding such opinions can be dangerous to your liberty."
Many well written articles about some highly dubious sentencing and criminal convictions in the UK.
"INNOCENT is made up of families, friends and supporters of wrongly convicted prisoners who have come together in order to help each other. It is an independent organization."
The link below is for a cocktail recipe site. They include an article that did the rounds via email a while back. It is pretty shocking but makes the point nicely.
News, Lies, Propaganda and Disinformation.
Perhaps understandably, our daily news is rather sanitized for mass consumption. Every broadcast and newspaper has it's own particular bias and it is hard to know quite what to believe - that is if you even think to question it at all. These following sites also have their own bias and political agenda but are worth perusing if for no other reason than some of the particularly graphic images, audio and movies are what lie behind what often passes for daily news. These images etc can be quite shocking indeed.
Large site containing much information, conspiracy etc. Includes the video of the horrific murder of American contractor, Nicholas Berg, in Iraq.
News that the rest of the media seem to forget.

Human Rights Violations against the Transgender
Community in India
"This poignant expose of human, and human rights, violations against transgender persons and communities should be compulsory reading for Indian human rights communities. The dominant discourse on human rights in India has yet to come to terms with the production/reproduction of absolute human rightlessness of transgender communities. The work in your hands not merely foregrounds the microfascism of the local police state, it also archives practices of everyday resistance to it and a program for a more inclusive formation of human rights movement in India."
